2023 CARB Compliance

As of January 1st, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have made a requirement for diesel trucks in participating states with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 14,000lbs to reduce exhaust emissions by meeting matter requirements and upgrading to a 2010 or newer engine model.

For our customers who may operate in-and-out of California (and other participating states), this may require that they act by replacing units, repowering engines, and qualifying for flexibility through CARB’s regulatory reporting system or submitting proof of exemption.

These new requirements are not solely pertaining to truck emissions, but to new Transport Refrigeration Units (TRU) manufactured after May 31st, 2023, as well. Any of these new units operating in California, in addition to lower emissions, will need to be CARB registered by December 31st, 2023. All trailer TRUs built before June 2023 are grandfathered under current regulations.

The chart below acts as a guide to whether one may need to consider new CARB requirements for any current or future TRUs within their possession:

At ILoca, we are dedicated to helping our customers navigate these everchanging industry standards.
